Which woman should be on the new $10? Jessica nominates the writer and scientist Rachel Carson (1907–1964), who with her book Silent Spring founded the modern environmentalist movement:
She was a real ambassador for, evangelist for, advocate for the idea that we, all of us—contribute to the world of our making, and that we have a responsibility that’s greater than the sum of our parts.

Because she thought about the planet, there’s a kind of largesse to that question, to thinking about not just politics or not just freedom but thinking about the whole world, that makes her worthy.
